Sri Lankan batsman Kusal Mendis was detained on Sunday after reportedly engaging in a deadly accident with a cyclist who died instantly, just outside Colombo, the country's capital, the police said.

The 25-year-old batsman was driving an SUV in Panadura before dawn, police said.

Mendis was named in the 16-player squad for the two-game home test series against England in March, but the tour was postponed owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

More than 3,000 people are killed last year in road collisions in Sri Lanka.

A former spin bowler, Kaushal Lokuarachchi, was given a four-year suspended jail sentence for crashing into a woman pedestrian and killing her in 2003.
