India reported 78,512 new coronavirus infections on Monday, marginally less than the previous day when it registered the highest single-day count of any nation in the pandemic.

On Sunday, India's total of 78,761 new cases broke the previous high of 77,299 in the United States on 16 July, according to official data from Reuters.

India, the second most populated nation in the world, has recorded the highest single-day caseload in the world every day since August 7th, surpassing the United States and Brazil.

In a total of 3.62 million deaths, India is quickly catching up with these two countries in terms of combined caseload but has a comparatively lower mortality rate.

India's death from COVID-19, a coronavirus disease, increased by 971 in the last 24 hours, taking a total of 64,469, said the Ministry of Health.
