The Norwegian Parliament has said that it has now stopped what had been a "significant cyber-attack" on it.

Director Marianne Andreassen said the email accounts of some presidents and staff of Norway's largest opposition Labour Party had been hacked.

"We take the matter very seriously," she said, BBC reported.

"And we have given full attention to analysing the situation to get an overall picture of the incident and the potential extent of the damage."

The Norwegian National Security Authority reported that it had been "assisting the Parliament with research and technical assistance" for several days.

In January, the personal information of hundreds of German leaders, including Chancellor Angela Merkel, were hacked and released online.

And last year, Australia's cyber intelligence agency blamed China for an effort by hackers to break into the Australian parliament, something that Chinese officials had denied.
