In 24 hours France reported nearly 10,000 new cases of coronavirus, marking the highest single-day count since the outbreak began.

Health authorities on Thursday announced 9,843 new confirmed Covid-19 cases, surpassing nearly 900 of the previous daily record.

The figures about toughening measures were published on the eve of a crucial meeting of ministers and health experts.

France has the world's 7th-highest death toll for Covid-19.

More than 30.800 people have died from coronavirus in the country.

In recent days the number of patients in the country's intensive care units has also risen, BBC reported.

At Friday's meeting officials will be debating implementing new steps to prevent the spread of the virus.

President Emmanuel Macron said the meeting would give the public a clear idea of what can be expected in the coming weeks.
