On Thursday, Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have been released from detention.

Following Rahul Gandhi accusing the Uttar Pradesh police of dragging him to the ground and resorting to lathi-charge, the two were arrested on their way to Hathras. He was also accompanied by his niece, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, to meet the family of the gang-raped woman.

After their convoy was stopped on its way to Hathras, the two leaders marched on the highway between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, reports NDTV.

The crime sparked outrage across the world. After the Uttar Pradesh Police refused to let them proceed, the Gandhis sat on the road with hundreds of supporters.

The UP administration imposed a ban on large gatherings prior to the visit of Congress representatives and erected barricades at the borders citing the coronavirus.

The Gandhis' SUV crossed the border even as Congress workers blocked roads and shouted slogans, but their convoy was stopped at Greater Noida, about 142 km from Hathras. The Gandhis then left the car and proceeded to walk with hundreds of Congress workers.

The young woman died at a Delhi hospital on Tuesday. She had sustained numerous fractures, paralysis, and was left unable to breathe from a neck injury when four upper caste men from her village attacked her on September 14. Police said there was a gash in her tongue and when the men were trying to strangle her, she had bitten it.
