WHO Says New Daily Coronavirus Cases Hit Record High of Over 350,000

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced in its daily newsletter on Friday that more than 350,000 new confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection reached a record high in the past day, reaching 36.36 million, while coronavirus-related deaths rose by more than 6,300 to 1,056 million.

On October 9, as of 16.30 Moscow time, as many as 36,361,054 new coronavirus cases and 1,056,186 coronavirus-associated deaths were recorded worldwide. Over the past 24 hours, the number of confirmed cases rose by 350,766 and the number of casualties increased by 6,339. The largest number of infections so far has been the daily surge of 338,779 on October 8, reports BSS.

The WHO statistics are based only on officially confirmed data provided by countries.

South and North America account for most cases of coronavirus reported on a regular basis-127,250. Europe ranks second (109,749 cases) and South East Asia (82,284) ranks third. Most single-day deaths are also accounted for in North and South America (3,282). In South East Asia, the daily death toll stands at 1,129 and in Europe at 950.

In the United States (7,471,688), the majority of COVID-19 cases are registered, followed by India (6,906,151), Brazil (5,000,694), Russia (1,272,238), Colombia (877,683), Spain (848,324), Argentina (840,915), Peru (835,662), Mexico (774,020) and South Africa (686,891).

Chinese officials told the World Health Organization (WHO) in late December 2019 of the outbreak of previously unknown pneumonia in central China's city of Wuhan. Since then, in every corner of the world, including Russia, cases of the novel coronavirus, called COVID-19 by the WHO, have been published. The WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic on March 11, 2020.
