About 100 million rural people in Bangladesh will have high-speed Internet connectivity by the end of this year.

In 2016, the Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) under the Department of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) undertook the Info Sarkar-3 project to provide 2,600 broadband Internet services at Union Parishad level, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a Facebook post on Sunday, UNB reports.

According to the progress report of the project, the broadband network is being set up in 2,600 unions in 448 Upazilas of 63 districts.

It will help to eradicate discrimination between urban and rural areas, and the advantages of digital technology will be readily available in rural areas, the Ministry said.

In Bangladesh, 54 percent of rural households do not have internet access, according to a recent survey, and experts fear that 'digital divide' could impede the progress of e-governance.

Research results revealed on Sept 13 suggest that 59% of rural households do not have access to a smartphone and 49% do not have access to computers.

The study, carried out by Brac Institute of Governance and Development, surveyed 6,500 rural households to develop a Digital Literacy Index that illustrates the current state of digital literacy in rural Bangladesh.
