The 22-day ban on catching and selling Hilsa started at midnight on Tuesday and will continue till 4 November.

In an effort to protect mother fish during the peak breeding season, the government imposed the ban.

The Hilsa protection campaign will be jointly implemented by the river police, the Bangladesh Coast Guard and the Department of Fisheries in 152 Upazilas in 36 districts of the country.

The Government will provide sufficient food assistance to fisherfolk who are unable to collect or sell hilsa during the ban so that no one involved in this process is facing a food crisis.
