"Ambassador Rabab Fatima, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, said, "'Eradicating poverty in all its forms everywhere' is an overarching goal of Agenda-2030.
Mobilizing sufficient resources and funding is crucial to creating a world free of poverty, she said while addressing the Second Committee of the General Assembly on poverty eradication in New York on Wednesday.
Highlighting the Government of Bangladesh's progress in eradicating poverty, Ambassador Fatima noted that a national Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) was launched by Bangladesh to help recognize citizens vulnerable to the Covid-19 pandemic and shocks.
She made some clear recommendations to warn that the ongoing Covid pandemic could slow down the rate of poverty reduction. Ambassador Fatima called on development partners to take steps to restore remittance sources, export earnings, ODA and private funding to Bangladesh in order to help reconstruct the post-pandemic situation.
Referring to the potential difficulties that Bangladesh could face after graduating from LDC status, she demanded that special and differential care and exemptions be retained for a prolonged period of time.
To abolish the digital divide, she added, we must encourage the development of productive capacity and financial inclusion of developed countries. In view of the dual threat of the current pandemic and the climate vulnerabilities facing Bangladesh, she sought additional financial and technical support from development partners to supplement the national efforts of Bangladesh.
Referring to the challenges the migrant workers are facing due to the pandemic, she also stressed the need for addressing the issues of falling remittance and the return of migrant workers.
