According to a count by AFP on Friday based on data from health authorities, more than 400,000 new coronavirus infections were identified globally on Thursday, a record number.

There were a total of 404,758 new cases recorded, with 6,086 new fatalities.

Only in part can this number be clarified by increased research after the first wave of the March-April pandemic, reports AFP.

In Europe, the number of cases grew dramatically in a single week, by 44 percent compared to the previous week, while infections increased by 17 percent in the United States and Canada.

Europe reported the largest number of cases on Thursday, more than 150,000, the largest since the beginning of the pandemic, and many continental countries now believe they have reached the second wave.

In Europe, the number of fatalities reported is still far from the rate reached in April, when it averaged more than 4,000 a day. But after a summer slowdown to fewer than 400 deaths a day in July, the number increased last week to a daily average of 1,000 deaths.

In the United States, where the number of cases reported decreased in September after peaking in mid-July, there was also an increase in infections.

Over the past seven days, there has been a daily average of over 50,000 new cases, peaking at over 70,000 on Thursday.
