US President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden are vying for the White House, with polls steadily closing around the United States on Tuesday and a long night waiting for results.

The first returns are trickling, with the US media projecting wins for the Republican incumbent so far in 13 states, including Indiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and West Virginia — all of which won in 2016, reports Agencies.

Joe Biden captured 11 states, including his home state, Delaware, and the New York big prize, plus Washington, the U.S. capital. As with Donald Trump, all the states that Biden claimed were won by Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016.

According to the US Elections Project Watchdog, more than 100 million Americans cast their ballots in advance of Tuesday's election day, a record number largely attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic, AFP reported.

BBC report shows that Democrat candidate Joe Biden is ahead of Republican Donald Trump winning 89 and 72 so far.

Out of 50 states, results of 17 are available, says BBC report.

Results suggest a tight race in key states including Florida, with the candidates needing 270 electoral college votes to secure the presidency.
