Happy Birthday, Runa Laila

Today is the birthday of Runa Laila, one of the leading singers in the subcontinent. Her fans, friends, and well-wishers from all over the world have sent greetings to the great singer as she grows older for another year.

Celebrities and her co-artists also take the love to social media and shower on Runa Laila with birthday wishes.

Marking the day in a fitting way, the country's numerous TV channels have drawn up an elaborate programme.

Every year Runa Laila celebrates her birthday with a special programme. This year, she has no special plan to celebrate the day due to coronavirus pandemic. But, Dhruba Music Station (DMS) will release Runa Laila-composed song ‘Ei Dekha Shesh Dekha’ on their YouTube channel today, marking the legendary singer’s birthday, sources said. Noted film director, producer, and lyricist Gazi Mazharul Anwar has written the lyrics of the song while United Kingdom-based Asian singer and music director Raja Kaasheff has arranged it’s music. Chandan Ray Chowdhury has made the music video of the song.

Runa Laila is a Bangladeshi singer, widely known as one of South Asia's most popular singers, and began her career in Pakistan's film industry in the late 1960s.

Runa Laila began her professional career in 1965. She played two songs in Jugnu, a Pakistani film. Her first song was 'Gudiya Si Munni Meri Bhaiya Ki Pyari' and her second song was 'Marna Bhi Nahin Aasan' which was a love song.

She made her debut at the age of 14 with the song 'Unki Nazron Sey Mohabbat Ka Jo Paigham Mila' for Pakistani film Hum Dono in 1966.

Runa has worked in a variety of different languages. She sang in seventeen languages, including her native Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Gujarati, Pashto, Baluchi, Arabic, Persian, Malay, Nepalese, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, French and English.

Runa Laila was named as SAARC Goodwill Ambassador for HIV/AIDS. She is the first Bangladeshi to hold this post.

In recognition of her contributions, Runa Laila was honoured with Radio Mirchi Music Award presented by Radio Mirchi at Nazrul Mancha in Kolkata in 2015, Independence Day Award of Bangladesh, Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 1976, 1977, 1989, 1992, 2012 and 2015, Shelteck Award, Lux Channel i Lifetime Performance Award, Saigal Award, India, Nigar Award, Pakistan (twice)1968 and 1970, Critics Award, Pakistan, Graduate Award, Pakistan (twice), and National Council of Music Award- Gold Medal, Pakistan.
