Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque on Monday said the government is working to stop the excessive use of antibiotics all over the country in a bid to tackle antibiotic resistance.

''Antibiotics resistance could be found throughout the country. I've always attached importance to controlling it. I have already held several meetings with the authorities concerned including Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA) in this regard,'' he said.

The health minister made the statements at a roundtable discussion titled 'Excessive use of antibiotics and the way out' jointly organized by the daily Kaler Kantho, CDC of DGHS and USAID at the conference room of East West Media Group Ltd at Bashundhara Residential Area in the capital.

The minister also laid emphasis on stopping sale of antibiotics without doctors' prescription.
