2 Die, 35 Injured in Armanitola Building Fire

Two people were killed and 35 others sustained burn injuries after a fire broke out at a building in the Armanitola area of Old Dhaka early Friday.

One of the deceased has been identified as Suraiya Akhter, 22, a student of Eden Mohila College, while the identity of another -- a security guard of the building -- is yet to be established.

Those injured include three fire officials, who have been admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said Rasel Sikdar, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence control room.

The injured firefighters have been identified as Liton, 30, Bisnu, 35, and Gias, 40.

The fire started at 3.17 am on the ground floor of the six-storey building, Rasel said, adding that 19 fire tenders were pressed into service soon. "The fire was doused around 6 am."

Raihan, Senior Station Officer (Media) of Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters, said Director General Brig General Md Sajjad Hossain visited the spot.

"A four-member panel will be formed to ascertain the exact cause of the fire," he added.
