The Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders who were recently recruited at Rajshahi University on ad hoc basis have confined the acting vice-chancellor, pro-vice chancellor, and registrar, in the VC office conference hall, demanding the authorities clear them to join at work.

VC Prof Ananda Kumar Saha, Pro-VC Prof Chowdhury Md Jakaria, and Treasurer Prof Abdus Salam, were confined in the conference hall.

The recruited BCL leaders and activists, entered the campus today morning and took a stand there to press home their demand. Later, the authorities sat in discussion with them.

When the authorities disclosed they were unable to facilitate their joining due to a government embargo, the BCL leaders confined the VC, Pro-VC, and other senior officials, in the conference hall, demanding the authorities give permission for them to join at their jobs.

Former VC Prof Abdus Sobhan, on his last office day at the university, 6 May, appointed 137 people in all to various jobs, including appointing a good number of RU BCL leaders.

The appointments were followed by a massive protest carried out by leaders of BCL's Rajshahi Mohanagar Unit.

In the meantime, the education ministry looked into the appointments and declared them illegal, citing a previous embargo on recruitment.
