A patient with mucormycosis, often known as black fungus, a rare fungal infection, was recently admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Dr Forhad Uddin Hasan Chowdhury, registrar of the internal medicine department, said the 45-year-old man, who came from Khulna with post-Covid-19 problems, had been receiving care at DMCH for a week.

After a sinus operation, his samples were sent for fungal testing, and the results confirmed black fungus, said the doctor.

"The patient's health has stabilized, and he has been prescribed antifungal drug Amphotericin B. Hopefully, he will make a full recovery soon," Dr. Forhad further said.

Bangladesh officially reported its first black fungus case on May 25. The patient is being treated at the Birdem General Hospital in Dhaka.
