Shatranji, a traditional Rangpur fabric has been designated as a Bangladesh Geographical Indication (GI) product.

It is the second Bangladeshi fabric to receive the designation, as Jamdani was previously recognized as a GI product.

Bangladesh Small & Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) was awarded a certificate as a Shatranji GI product.

Shatranji has been registered as the country's GI product by the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT), according to a news release issued on Thursday.

On July 11, 2019, BCIC submitted an application to the DPDT for Shatranji to be registered as a geographical indication product.

In November of last year, the Bangladesh Forms and Publications Office in Tejgaon, Dhaka, published 'Shatranji of Rangpur' in GI Journal NO-07, and DPDT awarded Shatranji the Geographical Indication Certificate.

Jamdani was recognized as a GI product of the country on November 15, 2016, paving the way for the indigenous textile to be branded both at home and abroad.
