The government has withdrawn the prevailing 5% duty on the import of onion to increase the supply of the commodity in the markets.

The regulatory duty on sugar import was also reduced to 20% from 30%.

On Thursday evening, the Ministry of Finance's Internal Resources Division (IRD) issued two separate gazettes in this regard.

The decisions were made since the cost of daily necessities in local marketplaces continues to rise.

In the local marketplaces, onions are currently selling for Tk70-80 per kg, up from Tk40 a month ago.

On the 11th of October, the trade ministry wrote to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) requesting that the levy on onion imports be removed.
