One Killed over UP Election Violence in Cox's Bazar, Election Suspended

A man named Aktaruzzaman (35) was shot dead in a clash between two parties in Cox's Bazar Sadar Upazila's Khurushkul Union Parishad (UP) election. Six others were injured.

Meanwhile, the returning officer in charge of the Khurushkul UP election has postponed the polling immediately after the incident.

The incident took place in Tetaiya area of ​​Khurushkul Union on Thursday (November 11) morning. Akhtaruzzaman Khurushkul is the younger brother of Sheikh Kamal, the member candidate (current member) of ward no.1.

Cox's Bazar RAB-15 CPSC Commander Major Mehedi Hasan confirmed the incident.

An eyewitness, Omar Farooq, said that during the voting, supporters of Babul, a member of the ward, tried to force the ballot papers to be stamped illegally. At that time, when Kamal's brother Akhtaruzzaman stopped him, the argument started. At one stage the two sides clashed. At that time, Akhtaruzzaman was beaten and shot. He was rushed to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead by the on-duty doctor.

Major Mehedi said several people, including member candidate Sheikh Kamal, were injured in the incident. Law enforcement is working to bring the situation under control.
