University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) authorities have expelled four
members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League unit for life, including its general
secretary Sadman Nahian Sejan, over an unnatural death of Professor Dr. Md
Selim Hossain of its Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) Department.
The decision
was taken at a syndicate meeting held at the KUET meeting room on Wednesday.
A total of 44
students have been punished for the incident.
KUET Student Welfare Director Prof Md Ismail Saifullah has confirmed this
information.
On
November 30, Professor Dr. Md Selim, the
provost of Lalan Shah Hall and a professor in the Department of Electrical and
Electronics Engineering (EEE) died of cardiac arrest in his residence after
completion of his duty at the KUET. President of KUET Teachers Association
Pratik Chandra Biswas alleged that Professor Dr. Md Selim died on the day due
to cardiac arrest following huge mental oppression.
Video
footage shows several students entering and leaving his room with professor
Selim Hossain. A group of 20-22 students led by the general secretary of the
university unit Chhatra League stopped Selim Hossain on campus and at one stage
they entered Dr. Selim's room. A search of CCTV footage showed that they stayed
in teacher Selim Hossain's room for about 45 minutes.
Some
teachers and students said that a section of students insulted Dr. Selim
following appointment of a new dining manager of Lalon Shah Hall, after which
he fell sick and died of cardiac arrest.
On
the night of the incident, students of EEE department staged a protest on
campus demanding punishment following the death of their teacher professor
Selim Hossain. Later the students calmed down with the assurance of the vice
chancellor.
