Three leaders of Brahmanbaria district unit BNP have been detained during section 144 began 6 am on Saturday in the district town, reports media.

Police detained the district unit BNP convener Zillur Rahman, former general secretary Jahirul Haque Khokon and the convening committee member Sirajul Islam from the area this morning.

Earlier on Friday night, Deputy Commissioner Hayat-ud-Doula clamped section 144 as the district unit BNP and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) called programmes at the same venue.

The restriction will remain effective from 6:00 am on Saturday to 12midnight.

It was learned that the district BNP was supposed to hold a mass rally on December 22, 2021, demanding the party's chairperson Khaleda Zia's release and treatment abroad.

The leaders postponed the programme due to the Union Parishad (UP) polls and deferred it to January 8 on Phulbaria Convention Center premises.

Meanwhile, the district BCL also announced a counter rally at the same venue.

However, defying the ban, the BCL leaders and activists were staging showdowns in the district town since the morning.

Regarding the matter, Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station officer-in-charge Emranul Islam said about 600 police personnel were deployed at various important points to fend off any trouble.
