Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and his wife Rahat Ara Begum have tested positive for Covid-19.

‘The BNP secretary-general and his wife have been diagnosed with the coronavirus,’ BNP chairperson’s media wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan said on Tuesday.

He said the BNP leader was infected with the virus nearly a week back after he had received the third dose of the Covid vaccine.

BNP vice-chairman AZM Zahid Hossain said that Fakhrul and his wife had been feeling unwell for a few days.

He said that the couple underwent the Covid tests on Sunday and their reports came positive.

Zahid said that the couple had been receiving treatment in isolation at their Uttra home under the supervision of Square Hospital’s medicine specialist Raihan Rabbani.

He said that both were suffering from coughing, but their overall conditions were good.

Zahid urged people to pray for the speedy recovery of the BNP secretary-general and his wife.

Fakhrul last joined a rally arranged by Nari O Shishu Odhikar Forum, a platform of BNP, in front of the Jatiya Press Club on January 8.
