The Supreme Court has imposed a ban on plying of battery-run three-wheelers (locally known as easy bikes) on highways across the country, reports media.

The apex court passed the order modifying the High Court’s previous order which was given on plying of easy bikes.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order following a petition on Monday.

Lawyers Tania Amir and Moniruzzaman Asad appeared for the court.

After the hearing, Tania Amir told reporters, “We have appealed to the Appellate Division and said that the livelihood of hundreds of people in the country is involved with battery-run three wheelers. Moreover, the government has made a draft policy for the import, manufacture and operation of these vehicles. The policy did not allow these transports to run on highways.”

She further said, “In the draft policy it is directed to keep charger station on the roads like petrol pump. Use of lithium battery in easy bikes will be finished by 2025 and as a result this transport will also become environmentally friendly.”

“The apex court corrected the High Court’s order following our petition. Battery-run three-wheelers and easy bikes will not be allowed on highways, the apex court said.”
