State Minister for
Labor and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian has said that Tk 2 lakh will be paid
to the families of those killed in the fire and explosion at the BM container
depot at Sitakunda in Chattogram.
This information
was given in a press release sent from the ministry on Sunday (June 5).
According to the
statement, the Minister of State for Labor has announced Tk 2 lakh each from
the Bangladesh Labour Welfare Foundation fund and Tk 50,000 as emergency
assistance for the treatment of the injured workers.
The statement
further said that the state minister of labor and the secretary of the ministry
have been investigating the accident since the fire broke out. The state
minister directed the Chattogram Deputy Inspector General of the Department of
Inspection for Factories and Establishments to rush to the spot and rescue the
workers and take care of the injured workers.

Mubarat, Deputy Inspector General of the Department of Inspection for Factories and
Establishments, Chattogram, has formed a three-member investigation committee
to probe the cause of the tragic accident. In addition, the Deputy Inspector
General has formed another 13-member committee to collect information on the number
of killed and injured workers in order to provide quick financial assistance
from the Bangladesh Labour Welfare Fund.
On the other hand,
SM Enamul Haque, director of the divisional labor department in Chattogram, has
formed another three-member committee to look into the overall labor situation
in the accident.
Earlier, a fire
broke out at BM Container Depot in Bhatiari area of Sitakunda
around 9:30 pm on Saturday (June 4). According to the latest information, 42
deaths have been reported so far, including fire service personnel. The injured
have been admitted to nearby hospitals including Chattogram Medical College.
