Former state minister for home affairs and Pabna-1 constituency MP Shamsul Haque Tuku has been elected new deputy speaker of Jatiya Sangsad. He was elected Deputy Speaker in the National Parliament on Sunday.
Chief Whip Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury proposed the name of Shamsul Haque Tuku as Deputy Speaker in the Jatiya Sangsad. Later, another member of the government party, Kamrul Islam, supported the proposal.
Earlier, Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said that only one nomination has been received for the post of Deputy Speaker. He was elected unanimously and unopposed in a voice vote.
President M Abdul Hamid will administer the oath to the new Deputy Speaker at 7 pm in the Parliament building.
The post of Deputy Speaker became vacant following the death of Fazle Rabbi Mia, MP, of Gaibandha-5 Constituency on July 22, 2022.
A former student of Rajshahi University, Shamsul Haque Tuku was a member of Mujib's army during the liberation war. This leader of Pabna District Awami League was elected MP for the first time on December 29, 2008 and got the responsibility of Minister of State for Energy and Mineral Resources. Later he was made State Minister for Home Affairs. MP Tuku, who was elected three times in a row, is currently serving as the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Home Affairs._Agencies
