Home Ministry Nods BNP Leader Salahuddin's Home Return

The Bangladesh Home Ministry has approved BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed's application for a travel pass, paving way for his home return.

"Our Home Ministry has approved BNP leader Salauddin Ahmed's application for returning home. The foreign ministry has communicated this to our mission in Guwahati," said Rafiqul Islam, acting Director General of the public diplomacy wing of the foreign ministry today.

Asked when he was coming back to Bangladesh, he said it would depend on him. He is free to come at any time.

Rafiqul Islam said Bangladesh's home ministry has approved the matter, and then the foreign ministry communicated the matter to the assistant high commissioner in Guwahati.

Salahuddin, 57, who was state minister for communication in the 2001–06 BNP-Jamaat government, had gone missing from Dhaka on March 10, 2015.

Three months later, he was found roaming around in Shillong on May 11, according to Meghalaya police. He was arrested for trespassing.

A lower court framed charges against him in the case on July 22, 2015, and acquitted him in 2018.

On May 8, Salahuddin applied to the assistant high commission of Bangladesh in Guwahati for a travel permit as his passport expired on July 11, 2016, and he couldn't renew it as he was in India.
