Six people have been killed in a fire at an under-repair nightclub in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh, a municipal police spokesman said.

The blaze broke out at 5pm local time Saturday at a nightclub in the capital's Tuol Kork district, Phnom Penh Municipal Police spokesman San Sok Seiha said.

"Four men and two women were pronounced dead in the fire," he told Xinhua, adding that the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Cambodia recorded a total of 454 fire accidents across the Southeast Asian country in 2022, killing 42 people and injuring 55 others, according to the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM).

According to the NCDM, a major fire killed 26 people at the Grand Diamond City Hotel and Casino in Poipet, a town that shares borders with Thailand, on December 28 last year.
