In connection with the assault on independent candidate Ashraful Alom alias Hero Alom at yesterday's Dhaka-17 by-elections, law enforcement has so far detained seven people.

"That occurrence [the attack on Hero Alom] is a random one. At a news conference held today at the DMP media center, Detective Branch (DB) chief Harun Or Rashid informed reporters that seven people had so far been arrested.

He added that police are waiting for Helo Alom or his lawyer to file a case in this regard, adding that the investigators are attempting to identify and detain further attackers.

"A team of police was sent to the Hero Alom's office … As they reached there, he left the office. Police are waiting there," he said.

In response to a question, he stated that the political affiliation of the attackers would not be taken into consideration.

According to Harun, voting was conducted peacefully and fairly at each center. Alom the Hero had traveled without difficulty to every center. However, the rogue occurrence happened in a matter of four to five minutes.

The DB head added that they would look into whether the attack's perpetrators intended to cast doubt on the outcome of the election.

When asked if Hero Alam started the incident, Harun responded that they will look into it.
