US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller has said that the United States wants to see free and fair general election held in Bangladesh.

Matthew Miller made the remark while answering a question on Bangladesh in the department’s daily press briefing at Washington DC on Wednesday. The nearly verbatim of the press briefing is available on the US State Department’s website.

The questioner mentioned that a wave of arson attacks on buses full of passengers and trucks, displacing rail tracks, hurling petrol bomb on train coaches during blockades, burning bus helpers alive with scores of injuries to derail the general election.

He wanted to know whether US considered such action undermine the prelude to free and fair election in Bangladesh.

‘...we want to see free and fair elections held in Bangladesh, and one of the components of a free and fair election is that that election be conducted without violence,’ Matthew Miller responded.
