A frigid spell is disrupting the Rangpur division, with temperatures plummeting to as low as 5.8°C in Tetulia upazila of Panchagarh on Friday, marking the lowest temperature of the winter season.

During the night and late morning, the region is shrouded in fog, contributing to the challenging weather conditions. According to Mostafizur Rahman from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s Rangpur office, temperatures in the division may decline further, potentially dropping below 3°C in Panchagarh.

The severe cold is adversely impacting the homeless population, who, lacking proper winter attire and blankets, resort to burning straw for warmth during the night. Individuals with limited incomes are also facing significant challenges as they find it difficult to venture outside in these harsh weather conditions.

Medical professionals are advising people, especially children, to avoid leaving their homes unless necessary. The region is witnessing a rise in cold-related illnesses, such as diarrhea and pneumonia, primarily affecting children and the elderly.
