In a statement today on the occasion of "National Statistics Day," Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declared that Bangladesh has made significant strides in economic and social indicators, surpassing many developed countries in South Asia.

Sheikh Hasina highlighted that effective planning and development strategies, implemented through timely and quality statistical management, are key to transforming Bangladesh into a prosperous and smart nation by 2041 and achieving the 'Delta Plan' by 2100.

She added that since the end of the liberation war in 1971, Bangladesh has placed a strong emphasis on organized development planning and statistical data analysis, which culminated in the establishment of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) in 1974. In 1975, the Statistics Division was created to provide coordinated and administrative support for national statistical management.

Prime Minister Hasina emphasized that the Awami League government has enacted the "Statistics Act-2013" and adopted the "National Statistical Development Strategy 2013-2023" for comprehensive and integrated statistical development.

Furthermore, she mentioned that various initiatives have been taken to enhance the capability and efficiency of the national statistical system, including its alignment with the Eighth Five-Year Plan. Notably, in 2022, for the first time, Bangladesh conducted a fully digital census and published a preliminary report within a month.

The Prime Minister concluded by stating that Bangladesh is now recognized globally as a role model for development, particularly in light of its success in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), she reassured that Bangladesh would continue to take effective steps to realize its objectives.
