Jhenaidah MP Anwarul Azim Anar Found Dead In Kolkata

The dead body of Md Anwarul Azim (Anar), lawmaker for Jhenaidah-4 constituency and president of Kaliganj upazila Awami League, has been found in New Town, Kolkata, India. According to media reports, after he went to Kolkata for treatment on May 11. As of now, the cause of his death remains unknown. According to the Kolkata Police, Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim was murdered in a house in Newtown, Kolkata on May 13. The country's media reported that two people were arrested in this incident. 

Later his body was recovered from Sanjeeva Garden in Kolkata's Newtown area on Wednesday (May 22) morning. Reported this Indian news media.

Earlier, MP Anwarul Azim went to Kolkata from Bangladesh for treatment on May 12. In Calcutta, he stayed at a friend's house in North Baranagar. Then on May 13, he left the friend's house for medical checkup. 

On that day at noon, from his mobile a WhatsApp message had been sent  from Delhi to inform his friend about his location. He also asked that time not to call him again in a WhatsApp message. On necessary, he will contact himself.  

Anar's personal assistant, Abdur Rauf, previously informed the media that the MP had been in contact with his family and party members for the first two days of his trip. “However, since Tuesday (May 14), all communication with him has been lost. He is also unreachable on WhatsApp.”

Md Anwarul Azim Anar was elected MP for Jhenaidah-4 in 2014, 2018, and 2024.

The family members from Bangladesh contacted the police after not being found. Earlier MP Anwarul Azim's daughter complained to DB. 

Meanwhile, according to the sources of Kolkata Police, the last mobile location of MP Anwarul Azim was found in Bihar. His phone was switched off on May 14.

Police said that despite being missing for the past eight days, messages were sent from his phone to family members that he had left for New Delhi. 

According to Awami League sources, the MP often visits India for treatment, and Kolkata is familiar to him. Some of his acquaintances are also here.

An official of the consulate said that the MP entered West Bengal through the Darshana border on May 12, on the same day, went to the house of a friend named Gopal Biswas in Baranagar. Two days later, on May 14, he left his friend's house, saying he would try to return the same day; otherwise, he would return the next day. However, since Azim did not return as informed, Gopal Biswas filed a missing case with Kolkata police.

On the other hand, West Bengal's online portal Kolkata Twenty Four reported in a report that Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim went to a house in Newtown, Kolkata on May 13, and was murdered in that house. 

Quoting the police, the news portal claimed that the house he visited in Newtown belonged to an excise officer. According to the police, MP Anwarul Azim was killed after being summoned to a rented house. On the day of the murder, more than one person, including a woman, was present in this house. But after the MP's mysterious death, everyone fled India, Kolkata Twenty Four reported.
