According to Indian news outlet NDTV, significant progress has been made in the investigation of MP Anwarul Azim Anar's murder after the arrest of Jihad Howladar, an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh residing in Mumbai. West Bengal CID sources revealed that Jihad Howladar confessed to being involved in the murder and dismemberment of the Bangladeshi parliament member in an apartment in Kolkata's New Town.
NDTV reported that Howladar's arrest uncovered shocking details about how the meticulously planned murder was carried out. Jihad Howladar stated that the mastermind behind the murder was Akhtaruzzaman, a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin. Under Akhtaruzzaman's orders, Howladar and four other Bangladeshi nationals strangled MP Anar to death in the New Town apartment.
Police claimed that MP Azim was first strangled and then his body was dismembered. A senior CID official in West Bengal confirmed on Thursday night (May 23) that Jihad Howladar is a Bangladeshi citizen who was illegally living in Mumbai. His ancestral home is in Barakpur, under Dighalia Police Station in Khulna District, Bangladesh.
The official added that Akhtaruzzaman brought Jihad to Kolkata two months ago. On Thursday, Jihad was intensively interrogated to determine where MP Anwarul Azim's body parts might have been disposed of.
In search of the dismembered body parts, the CID conducted a search on Thursday night in the Bagjola Canal near Krishnabati Bridge under Pollarhat Police Station, an area adjacent to Kolkata. The canal runs in front of the residential complex where MP Anar was murdered, but nothing was found, according to the West Bengal CID.
The senior CID officer described the horrific details of how MP Anwarul Azim's body was disposed of after the murder. During interrogation, Jihad admitted that under Akhtaruzzaman's orders, he and four other Bangladeshi nationals strangled MP Anar in the apartment.
Previously, on Wednesday (May 22), Bangladesh's Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan stated that Anwarul Azim Anar had been murdered and three individuals had been arrested in connection with the case.
The last sighting of MP Anwarul Azim Anar was in CCTV footage from the suburban apartment complex in Kolkata. The West Bengal CID later found bloodstains inside the New Town apartment and recovered several plastic bags believed to have been used to dump the dismembered body parts.
