IGP For Taking Action If Overseas Travel Ban Instructions Given

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun said that action will be taken according to the law if instructions are given on banning foreign travel of the persons against whom corruption charges are surfaced.

He made this remark while speaking to journalists after a procession celebrating the 110th anniversary of the Dhaka range of police at Segunbagicha in Dhaka on Monday.

Recent media reports have highlighted corruption among officials of various government departments. Often, it is observed that those accused of corruption manage to flee the country without any hindrance.

In reply to a query of journalists, IGP Al-Mamun said police cannot stop anyone anytime they want. They have to go through the law.

He clarified that the police cannot arbitrarily stop anyone; legal processes must be followed. He assured that if there are legal instructions to ban the foreign travel of individuals accused of corruption, appropriate action will be taken.

A Dhaka court has issued a travel ban on former National Board of Revenue (NBR) member Matiur Rahman, his wife, and his son following the controversy surrounding their wealth.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammad As-Shams Jaglul Hossain passed the order on Monday following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Congratulating the Dhaka Range on its founding anniversary, the IGP expressed hope that the Dhaka Range Police, who fired the first bullet in the Great War of Independence, would continue to perform their duties with dedication in service of the country.
