Kaptai Lake’s spillways have been opened further as the water level reached the danger mark.
“The 16 spillway gates of the dam were opened by 5 feet on Tuesday (September 3) morning to release 98,000 cusecs of water every second,” said ATM Abduzzaher, manager of Kaptai Hydropower Plant.
Additionally, 32,000 cusecs are being released for power generation. In all, 130,000 cusecs of water are flowing into the Karnaphuli River every second, he said.
Rainfall and water from upstream raised the water level at the dam, he added.
Kaptai Dam, located in Kaptai Upazila of Rangamati, is built on the Karnaphuli River, approximately 65 kilometres upstream from Chattogram. It plays a crucial role in flood control, electricity generation, and water management in the region.
