Former Sri Lanka Coach Hathurusingha Joins New South Wales

Former Sri Lanka and Bangladeshi coach Chandika Hathurusingha joined the New South Wales Blues on Monday as Phil Jaques' assistant.

It's the second position in the Sydney-based club for the experienced former opening batsman, who was dismissed by Sri Lanka after last year's disappointing World Cup campaign. Between 2011 and 2014, he performed a similar role.

"It is one of the best working environments I have experienced being part of NSW," he said. "The best part is there is always a lot of talent coming through NSW cricket."

Throughout his former career, Hathurusing has partnered with established test stars Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin and Shane Watson, along with emerging talents Steve Smith and David Warner.

He was the mentor of current coach Jaques during the last season of his Blues career.

"It's fantastic for our group that we have someone of Chandi's experience and he's worked with NSW before so he understands our culture," Jaques said.

"He's been an international coach who has worked with some of the best players in the world."

Between 1991 and 1999, Hathurusingha played 26 tests for Sri Lanka as a small right-hand batsman and was also a helpful medium-pace bowler.

He was appointed coach of Sri Lanka in December 2017, following a successful three-year stretch in charge of Bangladesh, but resigned after last year's World Cup, where he finished sixth.
