The 12th round of the National Chess Championship was underway. Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman was in a good position against another Grandmaster, Enamul Hossain Rajib. Suddenly, two chess players, Shakil and Naim, rushed into the Chess Federation room and announced, "Zia Bhai has collapsed."

Unfortunately, the country’s beloved Grandmaster did not make it back. He passed away (Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un).

Upon hearing about Zia's illness, everyone quickly rushed to the chessboard room. They hurriedly carried him downstairs. Zia was taken to Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital in Shahbagh in GM Rajib's car.

It took only nine minutes to get him from the Paltan Chess Federation to the hospital. There, emergency doctors conducted examinations but ultimately declared him dead.

Zia's wife, Labanya, was at the federation. His son, Tahsin Tajwar, was also participating in the National Chess Championship. Many members of the chess community were present at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital at the time.
