In Buenos Aires, Argentina faced a tough test against Chile without their star players, Lionel Messi and Ángel Di María, missing from the sky-blue jerseys on their familiar green pitch. The first half saw Argentina struggling to control the game, despite their attempts at fast-paced football. However, the second half brought a change in Argentina’s play. The Albiceleste found their rhythm and scored three goals against Chile, maintaining their dominance in the World Cup qualifiers under coach Lionel Scaloni.
On Friday, September 6, at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, Argentina defeated Chile 3-0. In this South American World Cup qualifying match, goals came from Mac Allister, Julián Álvarez, and Paulo Dybala.
During the first half, Argentina struggled to maintain control of the ball, and Chile responded strongly. In the 31st minute, Chile's Eduardo Vargas headed a ball that hit the post, denying Chile a goal.
After the break, Argentina turned the game around. Just three minutes into the second half, Argentine defender Cristian Romero passed the ball to Rodrigo De Paul, who advanced and then passed to Julián Álvarez. Álvarez crossed the ball in front of Chile's goal, which was missed by forward Lautaro Martínez. However, Mac Allister, in a favorable position, scored the first goal. This was Mac Allister’s third goal for Argentina.
In the 84th minute, Álvarez scored Argentina’s second goal with a stunning left-footed shot from outside the box. The third goal came from Paulo Dybala, who had replaced Mac Allister in the 79th minute. In added time, Dybala, wearing Messi's number 10 jersey, scored with a precise shot from a difficult angle, assisted by Alejandro Garnacho. This victory marked Argentina’s sixth win in the qualifiers.
Meanwhile, it was previously announced that Di María, who retired after the Copa America final in the USA, would be honored by the Argentine Football Association (AFA) during this match. Di María, along with his family, was present at the River Plate stadium before the game. His memorable moments with the Argentine team were shown on the stadium’s giant screen, and a video message from Messi was played for him. These tributes brought tears to the Argentine legend’s eyes.
With 18 points from seven matches, Argentina leads the South American qualifiers. They are five points ahead of second-placed Uruguay, who have played six matches. Argentina’s next match will be against Colombia.
