An Argentine court has granted permission to relocate the remains of Diego Maradona from his current burial site, following a request from his daughters.
On Tuesday, October 1, the court ordered that the remains of one of the greatest footballers of all time be transferred to a memorial in the center of Buenos Aires. The memorial will be built to honor Maradona.
The 1986 World Cup champion passed away at the age of 60 in November 2020 after undergoing brain surgery. After being released from the hospital, Maradona was staying in a rented house in Buenos Aires, where he died of a heart attack two weeks later.
Maradona's daughters had requested that his remains be moved to a memorial called "M10 Memorial." According to AFP, the court has approved the relocation of Maradona's remains, while also investigating whether there was any negligence by his medical team in connection with his death.
The Buenos Aires Times reported that the Third Criminal Court of San Isidro has issued the directive to transfer Maradona’s remains. Maradona is currently buried in Bella Vista, northwest of Buenos Aires. His remains will be moved to a new memorial in Puerto Madero.
Maradona's children stated that the proposed new memorial would be more secure than the current site, and it would allow Argentinians and people from around the world to pay their respects.
