Australian star batsman Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket, just a day after Australia’s semi-final defeat to India in the ICC Champions Trophy.
According to a report by a leading cricket website, while stepping away from ODIs, the middle-order batter will continue to play Test and T20 cricket.
Reflecting on his career, Smith stated, “It has been an incredible journey, and I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Winning two World Cups with my teammates was an amazing experience.”
He added, “Now is the perfect time to step aside as preparations for the 2027 World Cup begin. I feel this is the right moment to move on.”
Emphasizing his focus on Test cricket, Smith said, “Test cricket remains my priority. I am looking forward to the World Test Championship final, the series against the West Indies, and our home matches against England. I believe I still have a lot to contribute in this format.”
Smith captained Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy in the absence of Pat Cummins. Under his leadership, Australia advanced past the group stage and reached the semi-finals. However, their campaign ended with a defeat to India, a loss that is believed to have influenced Smith’s decision to retire from ODI cricket.
