The government is going to impose an additional supplementary tax on mobile phone services. A new notification in this regard may be issued soon.
National Board of Revenue (NBR) sources say that currently, customers have to pay a total of 54 taka 60 paisa tax including supplementary duty, VAT, and surcharge on a recharge of 100 taka. However, according to the government's new decision, if the supplementary duty is increased by 3 percent, this amount of tax will increase to 56 taka 30 paisa.
In the budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, the supplementary duty on mobile phone services was increased from 15 percent to 20 percent. Currently, 28 taka 10 paisa in duty, VAT, and surcharge are deducted on 100 taka of mobile recharge. In addition, 6 taka 10 paisa is deducted as revenue share and minimum tax and 20 taka 40 paisa as indirect tax.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Mobile Consumers Association President Md. Mohiuddin Ahmed recently expressed concern over the decision.
He said that there is a lot of inequality in internet services in Bangladesh and imposing additional taxes on it will further alienate customers.
