Thousands Flock to Mexico City Protest against President Lopez Obrador

In one of the biggest demonstrations against President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador since he took office nearly two years ago, thousands of demonstrators marched through central Mexico City on Saturday, reports Reuters.

Many of the demonstrators who flocked to the huge main square of the historic center of the capital waved Mexican flags while, according to video clips on news outlets and social media, others chanted "Lopez out."

Although polls show that the leftist president remains popular, many Mexicans have been upset by his management of the economy and security record, as has his propensity to polarize political discourse between his supporters and critics.

Lopez Obrador was renowned for leading large demonstrations against the government before becoming president in December 2018, and this week he said that such displays of frustration by conservative critics showed that he was shaking up the country.

Estimates of the number of demonstrators at Saturday's peaceful protest varied.

The Mexico City authorities, controlled by Lopez Obrador 's party, said 8,000 participated, while one of the opposition groups behind it, calling on Lopez Obrador to resign, said more than 150,000 participated.
