93 Dead, 30 Missing in Vietnam Floods, Landslides

Vietnamese soldiers with heavy machinery and rescue dogs searched for the last remaining troops trapped under a mudslide on Monday, after retrieving 18 bodies from deadly landslides caused by unrelenting rains in the last week.

Floods and mudslides killed at least 93 people in central Vietnam during the month of October and left 30 missing, among the four military personnel who lost 29 to adverse weather conditions, in what could be their highest number of peace-time casualties. On Monday, four bodies were found, reports Reuters.

The landslide early Sunday in the province of Quang Tri buried 22 soldiers and was the fourth incident of its kind in the space of six days in central Vietnam, with more heavy rain forecast in the coming days.

The military, which plays a crucial role in Vietnam's disaster response, has sent hundreds of rescuers, heavy equipment and search dogs to support the task as the country battles some of its worst floods in years.

In the Thua Thien Hue Province, rescuers fought driving rain in search of at least 15 construction workers who were missing after a landslide a week ago. Eleven soldiers who had been sent to find them were killed by a separate mudslide.
