Overall Number of Covid Patients Surpasses 553 Million

The overall number of Covid cases has now surpassed 553 million amid a rise in new infections in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

According to the latest global data, the total case count mounted to 553,566,290 while the death toll from the virus reached 6,359,949 on Saturday morning.

The United States has recorded 89,507,083 cases so far and 1,043,281 people have died from the virus in the country, the data shows.

The United Kingdom has recorded 22,741,065 cases so far and 180,417 people have died from the virus in the country, it said.

The number of new coronavirus cases across Britain has surged by more than 30 per cent in the last week, new data showed Friday, with cases largely driven by the super infectious Omicron variants, reports AP.

Data released by Britain’s Office for National Statistics showed that more than three million people in the UK had Covid-19 last week, although there has not been an equivalent spike in hospitalisations. The number of Covid-19 deaths also fell slightly in the last week.

India reported 17,070 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, taking the total tally to 43,469,234, showed the data released by the federal health ministry on Friday.

A total of 502,150 tests were conducted across the country in 24 hours. Besides, 23 deaths due to the pandemic since Thursday morning took the total death toll to 525,139.

The number of active cases in the country rose to 107,189, a rise of 2,634 during the past 24 hours.

Bangladesh registered five more Covid-linked deaths with 1,897 new cases in 24 hours till Friday morning amid an upward trend in Covid infections.

The fresh cases took the country’s total caseload to 1,975,682 while the total fatalities rose to 29,154, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.

The daily case positivity rate slightly dropped to 15.31 per cent from Thursday’s 15.70 per cent as 12, 403 samples were tested during the period, said the DGHS.

Of the deceased, three were men and two were woman, all from the Dhaka division.

The mortality rate remained unchanged at 1.48 per cent. The recovery rate declined to 96.56 per cent from Thursday’s 96.64 per cent as 248 patients recovered during this period.
