Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud highlighted the significance of liberty and freedom during India's 78th Independence Day celebrations. Reflecting on India's choice of freedom in 1950, he compared it to recent events in Bangladesh, underscoring the precious nature of these values. He stressed the importance of citizens' duties in upholding the constitutional values.

Chandrachud mentioned being inspired by an article titled *Songs of Freedom* by Karnataka vocalist Chitra Sri Krishna, noting how the concept of liberty is deeply embedded in Indian poetry. He warned against taking freedom for granted and emphasized the importance of understanding historical struggles to appreciate these values.

He also paid homage to freedom fighters who sacrificed their legal careers to join the independence movement, including Babasaheb Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer, Govind Vallabh Pant, Devi Prasad Khaitan, and Sir Syed Mohammed Saadullah. Chandrachud noted their vital roles in not only securing India’s independence but also in establishing a strong, independent judiciary.

Reflecting on his 24 years as a judge, Chandrachud emphasized that the work of the courts mirrors the challenges faced by ordinary Indians from diverse backgrounds who seek justice. He recognized the Supreme Court's role in addressing the concerns of citizens from various regions, castes, genders, and religions.

Additionally, Chandrachud highlighted the need for modern, accessible, and inclusive judicial infrastructure. He argued that such accessibility aids lawyers in their duties and fosters a sense of responsibility towards the judiciary, reinforcing its role as a custodian of justice.
