A fire at a school in Kenya has resulted in the deaths of at least 17 students. More than 12 other students have been hospitalized in critical condition due to severe burns.
The incident occurred on Thursday at Hillside Endarasha Primary School in Nyeri County. The exact cause of the fire is not yet known.
Kenyan police have launched an investigation into the incident, and the death toll may rise further.
Kenyan President William Ruto has described the fire as "horrific" and "devastating," and has ordered a thorough investigation. In a statement on social media, he emphasized that those responsible must be brought to justice.
Police spokesperson Resila Onyango told AFP that the bodies recovered were so badly burned that identification is difficult. She also reported that more bodies may still be found at the scene.
