The United Nations Security Council has called an emergency meeting regarding the Middle East following a missile strike by Iran on Israeli territory. According to a report by Al Jazeera on Wednesday (October 2), the meeting is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. local time at the UN headquarters in New York.
Meanwhile, Danny Danon, Israel's ambassador to the UN, accused Iran in a letter, stating, "They (Iran) are trying to destroy Israel." He urged the Security Council to condemn Iran and designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
On Tuesday (October 1), Iran launched around 200 ballistic missiles into Israeli territory. Tehran has acknowledged the strike, stating it was in retaliation for the killings of Hamas, Hezbollah, and IRGC leaders in Gaza and Lebanon.
Shortly before the attack, the United States had warned that Iran was preparing to launch a ballistic missile attack on Israel. A senior White House official disclosed this information during a live broadcast on CNN.
The official said that the U.S. believes Iran is ready to immediately launch a ballistic missile strike on Israel, based on intelligence. The official also noted, "We are taking defensive preparations to protect Israel from this attack. A direct military strike from Iran against Israel will have severe consequences for Iran."
Immediately following the attack, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced they were ready to respond to Iran’s actions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a warning, saying, "Iran has made a grave mistake. They will pay a heavy price for this."
