Indian industrialist Ratan Tata's funeral will be conducted with full state honors. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has declared a day of mourning in his memory today, Thursday (October 10). Ratan Tata passed away on Wednesday night (October 9) in a hospital in Mumbai at the age of 86.
According to Indian media outlet NDTV, to pay tribute to Ratan Tata, the Indian national flag will be flown at half-mast at government offices in Maharashtra. Additionally, many events scheduled for today have been canceled.
Ratan Tata's body will be kept at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Nariman Point, Mumbai, from 10 AM to 4 PM, allowing the public to pay their last respects. His funeral will take place in the afternoon in the Worli area.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is en route to Laos to attend the ASEAN-India and East Asia summit, so Home Minister Amit Shah will represent the government at Ratan Tata's funeral.
Ratan Tata managed over 30 companies operated by the Tata Group across more than 100 countries on six continents.
During his leadership, the Tata Group faced several significant controversies. In 2006, the group encountered opposition from farmers in West Bengal regarding the establishment of a Nano car factory in Singur, ultimately leading the state government to cancel the project.
Cyrus Mistry was appointed as the chairman of the Tata Group in 2012 but was removed from the position in 2016. Mistry later accused the Tata Group of feudal behavior.
In 2010, several voice tapes related to corruption in India's 2G sector were leaked, implicating Ratan Tata in conversations that raised allegations of the Tata Group influencing government policy.
