Former U.S. House Speaker and influential Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi has stated that if President Joe Biden had stepped down from the election earlier, his party could have performed better in last Tuesday's vote. She mentioned that had the President announced his withdrawal sooner, other candidates might have entered the race. The statement was made in an interview with The New York Times.
In the interview, Pelosi, one of the most powerful politicians in the U.S., said that if Biden had not campaigned, Democratic candidates might have performed better in the election. Her comment came after the Democrats lost control of both the White House and Congress in Tuesday's election, placing Biden in a difficult position.
In late July, after a weak debate with former President Donald Trump, Biden announced his decision to step down from the election. He quickly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to run in his place.
In Tuesday's U.S. presidential election, Kamala Harris was defeated by Trump. Pelosi told *The New York Times* that after Biden's withdrawal, several Democratic candidates wanted to run, but Biden hastily nominated Kamala Harris to be the nominee.
Pelosi believes that if Harris had started her campaign earlier without Biden and instead focused on supporting other Democratic candidates, she might have had a better chance in the election. She also noted that Biden's Middle East policy and his pro-Israel stance had a negative impact on Democratic candidates in the race.
