Rebels have taken control of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's palace in Aleppo, marking their complete takeover of the province. Following the capture of Aleppo, the rebels have now launched an assault on the nearby Hama province.
According to a report by Al Jazeera on Sunday (December 2), the Syrian armed rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) began a surprise attack against government forces in Aleppo and Idlib provinces last week. On Sunday, the rebels seized not only Assad's palace in Aleppo but also the Aleppo Military Academy.
AFP reported that, except for some Kurdish-majority areas, the entire city of Aleppo is now under rebel control. This marks the first time since the civil war began in 2012 that the province has fallen out of Assad's control.
Al Jazeera also noted that after taking Aleppo, the rebels have launched an offensive in Hama province, with ongoing clashes between the rebels and government forces in the province's peripheral areas.
Syria’s state news agency SANA reported that government forces have established strong positions in Hama and have managed to push the rebels back in several regions.
Airstrikes by Syria and Russia on rebel-held areas continue unabated.
HTS, which was previously the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda, severed its ties with the terrorist group in 2016. The United States, Syria, and Russia have listed HTS as a "terrorist organization."
